SCOTTISH TARGE WITH SPIKE - SHIELD OF THE HIGHLAND CLANSMAN

This is an excellent example of the Scottish Targe. Many such Targes were last used at Culloden Moor in 1746, site of the last battle between the Jacobite and Government Armies. Though carried into battle by Clansmen as their main means of defence for hundreds of years, the Targe did little that fateful day to stop the musket balls or grapeshot which devastated the Highland charge.  Finding that their Targe also gave little protection against the new bayonet technique used by the Government Line, the few Clan Regiments that managed to close with the Redcoats were routed after mere minutes of bloody and savage hand to hand fighting.

S5740M HIGHLAND TARGE WITH SPIKE crafted by John Barnett Collection.

A very authentic looking reproduction of the Highland Targe with detachable spike. Leather over wood with brass decoration. Two leather arm and hand straps to the rear along with a pouch for storing the spike. Size approx 46cm diameter, 1.5cm thick.

Comes complete with a FREE presentation / display case. These are rustic handmade wooden boxes which may require a little attention and would benefit from a coat of varnish if you fancy a small project! The case is supplied FREE with the Targe at no additional cost.

The Targe will be supplied with a lovely authentic aged brass finish. If you prefer a bright shine, simply give the brass a quick polish!

Makes a great display piece, or an ideal gift for the living history enthusiast!
