SCOTTISH BASKET HILTED BROADSWORD (MUSEUM QUALITY VERSION, JOHN BARNETT COLLECTION)

This is an excellent example of the Basket Hilt Sword. Many such Swords were last used at Culloden Moor in 1746, site of the last battle between the Jacobite and Government Armies.

The bloody and savage hand to hand fighting was so ferocious where the Clansmen penetrated on the left of the Government line, that the clang of broadsword hacking and slashing against the metal barrel of the brown bess could be heard on the battlefield above the musket and cannon fire.
